Move in day is one of the most exciting days of the year. College is the opposite of high school in that in high school, summer is the best time of the year and no one wants to go back to school, but in college, the best time of the year is when we are at school.
Saturday my parents drove up to ONU with me and helped me move in. I'm actually extremely surprised we were able to fit most my stuff in my little Honda Civic. After my parents left, my roommates and I got back to doing our normal sitting around and doing nothing. When my stomach started rumbling, I was reminded that I was going to have to cook for myself for the first time in my life. We took a trip to Wal-Mart that lasted about two hours too long, but after multiple phone calls to my mom, I felt confident that I had a cart full of food that I could cook up into something good. When we got home, however, I was quickly reminded of my terrible cooking skills. I ate the saddest stir fry of my life and then did the dishes. As I was washing off my plate I thought about the fact that I was going to have to do this every day for multiple meals.
My mom may be getting many more phone calls from me than she anticipated.

Love your story about having to cook and be on your own for the first time! I can surely relate to this as this semester I also had to stuff everything in my small car, a Saab 9-5. Much like you I also struggled cooking my first meal this past Wednesday, turned out nothing like I had pictured in my head. The more practice we get the better we will become! By next summer we should be able to cook full meals for our parents.
ReplyDeleteI love this story!! I'm commuting from home this year so I don't always have to cook for myself, but I usually end up doing it anyway because my mom's typical response to what's for dinner is always "I'm having (insert food) what you eat is your problem". Long story short, I'm a pro at making pancakes and spaghetti now. Hang in there cooking gets easier the more you do it.
ReplyDeleteHey Mack, I loved your story! I also know how you felt when you said that you were surprised that you could fit most of your stuff into your car. But don't worry I am confident that you will be able to master cooking, all it takes is time and practice.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely feels good knowing you can finally be independent! Especially in college.
